Allergy season is just something we have to get through, but sometimes you’ll find your nose is stuffed up, runny or itchy even long after allergy season has passed. When this occurs, it may well be the result of mold somewhere in the home. What a lot of people don’t know, though, is that mold isn’t just something that occurs in the walls of your home. Mold can happen anywhere. If you’re having an allergic reaction and can’t figure out what’s going on, here are a few places you may want to check.

Coffee Makers

Coffee makers spend most of their lives full of lukewarm water. If that’s not a mold magnet, then what is? Check all over the coffee maker next time you clean it. Just rinsing out the basket and the pot itself isn’t going to do a lot of good. Check the tubing, the water tank and the entire unit, and be on the lookout for mold.

The A/C

A/C units tend to give off a lot of condensation, which can be a choice locale for mold to grow right underneath the unit. Check outside as well as look inside and under the unit. If you find any mold, grab a dust mask and scrub it out with bleach.

Tobacco Pipes

There aren’t a lot of pipe smokers left these days, but for those who do enjoy an ocassional puff of tobacco, pipes, hookahs and other assorted smoking equipment make for a great breeding ground for mold, especially for part-time smokers. The moist tobacco, if left in the pipe, can attract mold quite easily. Clean the pipe out after each use, and don’t leave tobacco in it overnight.

The Toilet Tank

Usually, we only open the toilet tank when there’s something wrong with the toilet itself. Opening it up now and checking for mold isn’t a bad idea, though. While porcelain is generally less susceptible to mold than say drywall or wood, there are a lot of parts in the back of the toilet that can get moldy quick if not checked up on now and then. Just give it a good cleaning with bleach every few months, especially in the summer.

Outdoors

Check outside your home, particularly near windows and vents. Mold can get in through these openings and cause itchy eyes, trouble breathing and so on. Just keep these areas clean, check them now and then and make sure mold spores aren’t drifting in with the breeze when you crack the window every morning.

We’re not trying to make anybody paranoid here. In truth, mold isn’t quite as dangerous as a lot of people say. It can cause discomfort, but if you just make sure to find it and clean it out whenever you think you may be dealing with allergies caused by mold, then you should be just fine.
